It was just last year — remember last year? A week after the traditional date of the Kentucky Derby , on May 9 to be exact, I spent a long evening helping Yew Dell Botanical Gardens nursery and greenhouse manager, Jacob Stidham, set up every random piece of heat-producing equipment we could find, to generate a bit of warmth in our hoop houses. Whether it was dogwood winter or blackberry winter or just Mother Nature in a bad, bad mood, the mid-May freeze of was a big fat reminder. In the greater Louisville area, our generally accepted frost-free date is around May

Here's why you shouldn't rush to plant your garden just because it's Kentucky Derby Week

You can start many autumn crops while the weather is still hot. That way, there'll be enough time to harvest them before the snow flies. Summer might be high season in the vegetable garden , when tomatoes, squash, and other warm-season plants are in overdrive, but autumn can be just as productive. If you begin planning and planting in late summer, you can extend your harvest of garden-fresh produce well into fall and even winter by growing cool-season crops. For example, try sowing fast-growing salad crops to quickly fill in the most bedraggled summer vegetable beds.

You can save vegetable seeds from your garden produce to plant next year. Seed saving involves selecting suitable plants from which to save seed, harvesting seeds at the right time and storing them properly over the winter. Tomatoes, peppers, beans and peas are good choices for seed saving. They have flowers that are self-pollinating and seeds that require little or no special treatment before storage. Seeds from biennial crops such as carrots or beets are harder to save since the plants need two growing seasons to set seed. Plants with separate male and female flowers, like corn and vine crops, may cross-pollinate. It is difficult to keep the seed strain pure. Popcorn can pollinate a stand of sweet corn from a nearby garden on a windy day.
